Good news!

My good friend Deb received quite a proposal yesterday as her now fiancé managed to convince the folks running the local Banff Film Festival last night to let him put his engagement video in to the mix for all to see. I didn’t get to see it in person but I’m really glad to hear/see the good news this morning!

It was interesting for me to start this post with ‘My good friend’ because that turn of phrase is usually reserved for close friends and to be honest, she and I aren’t terribly close. But she is indeed a good friend. We met under somewhat odd coincidences revolving around a combination of technology, work, and community. We now connect mostly through intermittent facebook comments and likes, with occasional brief messages from time to time, and rare face to face sightings. This age of technology connects us to huge numbers of ‘friends’ that aren’t really what many would consider to be terribly important ones in the grand scheme of things. But for me at least, there’s definitely a lot of ‘good’ ones that have grown thanks to the connecting opportunities that facebook, cell phones, blogs, instant messaging, YouTube, Flickr, and other assorted websites have provided.

And so I post this to celebrate Deb and Bob (who I’ve never met) and also to celebrate all those of you that are a positive part of my life, even though it may just be
a click of a link, or a share of a post,
a smile in a comment, or a late night txt,
a brief message asking a question, or providing an answer,
an audience for my excitement, or a support group for my frustrations.

Even with all the distractions, addictions, and subversive intrusions that are woven into life now, I’m still glad to have it around. Because while I spend my days isolated at times, I can still be reminded of the people, friends, family, and life beyond my physical reach.

There’s a lot of good out there.
